How To Shop For Thermal Vision Goggles

By Frank Stevens

Most people wouldn't think about owning their own thermal vision goggles, but plenty of people have seen them in films to know what they are. They are usually the subject of spies sneaking into enemy camps and the like, but they do have their real-life uses. In the real world, these types of devices are used by soldiers or law-enforcement officers who use them for security and surveillance, but outdoor adventurers are also using them for activities such as hunting or camping.

There are two different types of night vision technology to chose from: image enhancement and thermal imaging. Ones that use image enhancement collect small amounts of light, including parts of the light spectrum that are not visible to human eyes in most cases.

Image enhancing models get light from the lower part of the light spectrum, while thermal vision goggles get light from the upper part of the spectrum. This light is emitted from the heat of an object and the goggles capture portions of the heat that is being emitted. The viewer sees the heat of whatever is being focused on, but does not get a crisp image. The hotter the object, the more light is emitted and shown in the viewfinder. A living creature or human will give off more infrared light than an inanimate object such as a tree or rock.

Thermal vision goggles can be held in the hand or worn on the head. The goggles may have a single lens or two eye pieces, though that depends on the model. A spotting scope for focusing in on a target is also an option to consider. Goggles that strap to the head are the best choice when the activity requires an abundance of moving around, as they do stay in place and keep your hands free.

Another benefit to thermal imaging models is that the reflection of light is not required to see a live object in complete darkness. With the right kind of thermal vision goggles, you can see things in complete darkness or from very far away.

You can find several different models and styles, and usually require only two AA batteries to use. Thermal vision goggles can be found relatively inexpensively from outdoor, camping or online retailers. These kinds of goggles are a great purchase for anyone who enjoys things like hunting, camping, or hiking and they also can liven up to an outing.

A Quick History of the Personal Watercraft

By Kurt Ragget

Snaking on the waters with your personal watercraft is a great experience. The ride alone gives you a heightened sense of excitement. But have the thought of the personal watercraft's history came to your mind? If not, then just read on and add some personal watercraft knowledge into your memory bank.

In the late sixties, the Bombardier family thought of a concept vehicle that would soon become the core of an extremely exciting and competitive industry. What the Bomvardier family wanted was a vehicle that would resemble the famed Ski-Doo snowmobile but would run on water. Being a family who spent their summers on and around the lakes of the Laurentian region of Quebec, the Bombardier household would sensibly have a certain liking towards water sports.

In an effort to realize their dream, the Bombardier family approached Clayton Jacobsen II. Jacobsen was also obsessed in building a motorcycle-like vehicle that can be driven on water. The two parties joined their heads and their resources to build the first ever personal watercraft.

Jacobsen first started with a stand-up design. Eventually the two parties worked for a personal watercraft design that allows the rider to seat while navigating the vehicle. The Bombardier family provided Jacobsen with an 18-hp Rotax engine. From then on, he toiled to perfect a sit-down design of his machine.

In 1968, the combined resources of the Bombardier family and Jacobsen gave birth to Sea-Doos (a play on the name of Bombardier's famous snowmobile line). A year later, Bombardier updated the engine and integrated it with a liquid cooling mechanism, an update of Jacobsens design, which was basically cooled by air intake. But problems with corrosion and engines made the Bombardiers give up on the project.

Jacobsen tried to save the project. He made a list of changes that should be made and incorporating rubber components and even suggested the idea of waterproofing the body. Bombardier failed to act on Jacobsens suggestions and the project was shelved.

Jacobsen, adamant that he was, bought the rights of the patent and sold the design to Kawasaki in 1971. With ramifications by Jacobsen and the engineering technologies of Kawasaki, they were able to create a better, more functional type of personal watercraft. In 1973, Kawasaki launched the first commercial personal watercraft, the Jet Ski. Today, the term Jet Ski includes all types of water crafts, even though it is a trade name registered for the use of Kawasaki Motors.

Choose Your Airsoft Guns- Making The Right Choice

By Anthony Carter

Before choosing an Airsoft guns one needs to consider the usage of it in future. The choice entirely depends on the situations the guns could be used. There are cheaper models but they do not serve all the purposes of a gun. Instead, choose based on the purpose and the circumstance. It could either be a simple practice or an action packed war game in a crowd or group or just a one on one shooting session. Unless the right kind is used, not only does the entire purpose go for a waste but not using the right kind of accessories might lead to trouble.

For beginners or just one on one shooting or practice under an instructor or by self perfect is the spring gun. This doesn't have to necessarily reload fast and this is sufficient for beginners. This gun comes with a spring that acts as the main mechanism and that's how this got the term "Spring guns".

This is why this model is termed as spring guns. This is usually preferred by beginners and is also popular among instructors.

For those interested in games it's advisable to choose those that reload fast. For such purposes there are a variety of guns ranging from simple gas guns to those high end sophisticated electric guns. Though both have the same capability and capacity to shoot they differ in their mechanisms.

The Gas guns work on simple gas power whereas the Electric ones are more modern and their internal motor runs on electric force. It also has a very realistic result. Both the types are popular among shooting enthusiasts though both differ in their intended purposes.

Gas guns work on an internal gas driven mechanism which is ideal for usage in warmer climate wherein the heat usually keeps the gas usable and lively. In colder weather these guns are hard to use. They simply don't work or discharge the bullets and it's not popular in such temperatures. This is why the electric guns were created to necessarily compensate for such cold climates.

In fact they were created to compensate for uses in colder climates and it became popular among enthusiasts. They are ideal for any climatic conditions, changes, and works like a real gun. They also have the advantage of being automatic weapons due to the electric motor that's inside. This helps to continuously fire at one stretch.

Keeping in mind all the factors needed to choose an Airsoft gun, it's always better to not just go for one based on the shooters stage but also choose depending on the purpose of the gun and the situations it should handle. For any beginner or for just practicing the spring ones are more than sufficient. Those considering serious action like war games or similar activities can opt for Electric type. Also, the latter is suitable for all climatic conditions.

Enjoy A Holiday Or Vacation But Watch Out For Mosquito Bites

By Dorothy Yamich

Whenever you take an air flight or luxury cruise on vacation or holiday to a tropical climate there is a possibility that you may encounter some mosquito borne diseases. The following information will help you to take measures to protect yourself.

Mosquitoes are a major cause of a number of serious diseases throughout the world. Five of the most common mosquito-borne diseases are Malaria, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, and Dengue Fever.

Malaria is the most common of these serious diseases that are caused by mosquitoes, and can be fatal. Well over a million people die from this disease world wide every year. Only the female mosquito transmits this disease.

When infected female mosquitoes bite people they deposit parasites into their bloodstreams. These parasites deposit eggs that incubate and grow in the peoples' livers and then attack their red blood cells.

There is an anti-malaria prescription that can be taken to help protect you when you're traveling on vacation in mosquito infested tropical climates. To receive maximum protection, this medication should be taken before, during, and after your trip. However, these pills are not always completely effective.

Pharmaceutical drugs such as Chloroquine, Fansidar, Mefloquine, and Doxycycline, can be prescribed to treat malaria, but again, they are not always completely effective. Ask the doctor more about the dosage and length of time that you should take any of these prescription medications.

You can protect yourself from yellow fever by getting vaccinated by a physician at a local health authority before you travel on your holidays. This vaccination lasts about ten years and is very effective.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that's transmitted through a bite from an infected mosquito. This disease can be prevented with a series of three vaccinations.

Dengue fever is a viral disease that's spread by mosquitoes. There's no vaccination that will prevent this disease.

The West Nile Virus is also spread by infected mosquitoes. There is no vaccine available to protect you from this disease.

Please keep in mind that when it comes to serious mosquito-borne diseases, prevention is always better than a cure, even if there is one. It is always the best policy to limit the chance of being bitten and infected by mosquitoes in the first place. Always wear loose fitting, long-sleeved shirts and slacks between dusk and dawn and use a DEET containing insect repellent when mosquitoes become active near dusk. Be sure to kill all the mosquitoes in your room before going to sleep, and use mosquito nets as well as coils when camping or sleeping outdoors.

The Beginnings of Aikido

By Rhys Jones

The term 'Aikido' is created by the grouping of three characters in the Japanese language. 'Ai', which signifies 'joining'; 'ki', which means 'spirit' and 'do', which means 'way'. These three words actually encapsulate the essence of Aikido as a type of martial art: 'the joining of the spirit to find the way'. It was only in the period from 1930's to the 1940's that the name Aikido was formally accepted as the name of this martial art variety.

Aikido employs ways that do not gravely injure or kill not like other kinds of martial art. The movements and skills being taught are simply intended to distract attention or stop attackers. This is possibly the reason why most people prefer Aikido, because of its concentration on peace and harmony as opposed to violence and conflict. In deed, Aikido developer, Morihei Ueshiba, is of the conviction that to have power over aggression without causing any harm is the art of peace.

Ueshiba, who is also called Osensei, which signifies 'Great Teacher', formed Aikido from the doctrine of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. He incorporated the methods of the 'yari', the spear; the 'juken', the bayonet; and the 'jo', which is a short quarterstaff. But what ultimately distinguishes Aikido from other types of martial art is the fact that its proponents can strike while empty-handed. Proponents require no arms for their protection.

As a small child, he was much into physical fitness and conditioning. This was because of his vow to avenge his father's attackers. In due course, his studies and activities brought him to the discipline of the various martial arts. He studied many of them. He even has certificates for fencing, fighting with spears, etc. He has learned it all. This is possibly the explanation why Aikido is such a diverse and multi-disciplinary kind of martial art.

Yet in spite of his skill, he remained discontented. He felt that there was still something missing. It was then that he turned to the religions. He studied under a spiritual leader, Onisaburo Deguchi of the sect named Omoto-kyo in Ayabe. Deguchi taught him to take care of his psychic growth. He then combined his spiritual beliefs and his mastery of the different martial arts and Aikido was born.

His relationship with this fascinating spiritual leader Deguchi also paved the path for his introduction to the elite political and military personnel as a martial artist. Because of this association, he was able to launch Aikido and even pass on his knowledge to students, who have, in turn, developed their own methods and movement in Aikido.

Aikido is a blend of the different styles of jujitsu as well as some of the techniques of sword and spear fighting, of which Ueshiba was an expert. To obtain an general picture, Aikido combines the joint locks and throws of jujitsu and the techniques of the body necessary when fighting with swords and spears.

Oriental in origin, it was brought to the West by Minoru Mochizuki when he visited France in 1951. He introduced the Aikido techniques to students who were studying judo. In 1952, Tadashi Abe came to France as the official Aikikai Honbu spokesperson. Then in 1953, Kenji Tomiki toured throughout the United States while Koichi Tohei stayed in Hawaii for a full year where he set up a dojo. Aikido then spread its influence in the United Kingdom two years after and in 1965, it reached Germany and Australia. At present, Aikido has centres all over the world.

Water Is The Most Important Item To Take On A Long Trek Bicycle Tour

By Larry Wildems

Planning on a long ride around the lake or through the country back roads next weekend? You had better make sure you take along enough water to keep your strength up. Water is one of the most important factors to be aware of for a safe and enjoyable trip. After all, the human body is up to 85% water.

Research shows that a 50 to 60 mile bike run burns an average of 4000 calories depending on how fit you are and how hot the day is. There is more energy spent on hot days than mild or cools days. If you are traveling on hills or mountain trails, you will burn more energy than biking over level, even ground. Either way, you will require to pack enough water to take care of your needs.

Studies have found that most bikers will need a minimum of 2 quart bicycle water bottles to satisfy their thirst on a sixty mile trip. Two quarts is just a recommendation and it is a good idea to add several more bottles if you are going on a longer trip. Often, long distance bicycle trekkers, when traveling over several days, will wear water systems in back packs. Some solo endurance bike riders, when traveling over very long distances, carry their own back pack water systems and will sport water bottles as extra water sources.

Back pack water storage systems come in different sizes to accommodate larger amounts of liquid. You can find 60, 72 and 100 liter packs. The 100 liter system needs extra support to stabilize the weight of the water. The better back packs come with a waist strap to help with this problem. You will never regret bringing extra water on your next bike trip. But, how much is enough water?

You probably are entering a mild state of dehydration if you are thirsty or experiencing cotton mouth. Determining the color of urine is an indicator of your water saturation point. Do you have clear urine? This generally means you are fine with your liquids. There is a good chance you need more water if it is dark or becomes cloudy.

After as soon as ten minutes of dehydration, the body can develop muscle cramping. General fatigue and irrational fear can follow the onset of this cramping. This condition can develop into diminished strength and loss of complex motor skills if left untended.

So before you take to the highway with your cycling buddies for that long road trip, check your maps, your repair kits and don't forget to pack plenty of good old H2O in your bicycle water bottle.
